Would Have Been Cooler if He'd Called it "Beervana," But ....

Portland Mayor Tom Potter has declared the city "Beertown," mainly as a tie-in for BridgePort's forthcoming Beertown Brown. (Nice PR work.)

Friday afternoon, Mayor Tom Potter will officially declare Portland "Beertown," where he will serve as honorary mayor....

Portland is known all over the world as "Beervana," largely due to the 28 breweries operating within city limits, more than any other city in the world. This title does not include the eight breweries that operate in the surrounding metro area.

There are three more breweries scheduled to open in 2007, making Portland the largest craft brewing market in the country.

Perhaps he did not declare this city "Beervana" in deference to the state, which has some claim to the name. In any case, good to see the city leaders embrace our heritage.

  1. Does this mean they're dropping the label....Rose City???

    "Beer Town" is OK, but Beer City or Beer Capital or The Capital of Beer or Beer Metropolis would have sounded a litle more offical and less po dunk-y.....

    ;-}

  2. But, city, capital, or metropolis don't rhyme with brown.

  3. SO... They're not offically changing the Portland theme name to "Beertown?" That's what the original article aparently wrote... It said, "Mayor Tom Potter will officially declare Portland "Beertown..." Then said, along with the introduction of Bridgeport's Brown...

    As Jeff asid, "It's good PR...for bridgeport..."

    They could ahve named Portland anything beer ealted they wanted, Bridgeport just so happen to be itroducing a beer and named it Beertown...

    If it's the other way around, then the original article is poorly written to make people think Porland changing the "Offical" name....

    Beervana would ahve been nice too... I guess Dridgeport could named their beer Beervana Brown too... ;-}

  4. I re-read the original post, and although I am privy to BridgePort info, it seems to be fairly straightforward. BP wants to sell ale, and they worked it out with the Mayor to try and help. Whether it helps or not remains to be seen, but I don't believe there has ever been an "official" title given to Portland or the State in regards to it's brewing industry.
